Almada Negreiros and Leopoldo de Almeida next to the Monastery of Batalha
There are photographic records of Almada Negreiros visiting the Batalha Monastery at least twice, at different times.
According to the author himself, the same year he visited the Monastery (1958), he published an article that mentions this trip (Diário de Lisboa, 25th of April, 1958).
In his interviews in 1960, he also describes the moment of discovery regarding the importance of the wall that would serve his altarpiece reconstitution:
"After several visits to our gothic monuments, the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, the architect José Cortês, and myself, finally arrived at Batalha. The architect immediately pointed out a Chapel wall. Without saying a word, he had the polite joy of giving credit where credit was due. I was the one who said: it’s here. Without further ado, the three of us embraced in a hug.” (Diário de Notícias, 7th of July, 1960)
