Arquivo virtual da Geração de Orpheu

Almada Negreiros e Sarah Affonso

Fernando Pessoa – “The sky is blue and the green grass more green…”

[BNP/E3, 49A4 – 15]

The sky is blue and the green grass more green

     Than dreamed grass when

She came towards my soul, the uncrowned queen

          Of unattainable things.

Her brows shining as a star that means

Fate to the souls born under its ascent.

Her hands were trenched towards the distant scenes

Of all my heart hath meant.

Then my pain became numb like one that sleeps

Yet tossed from side to side within my heart,

And she passed by me like a saint that keeps

God’s meanings as her lovely part.

The angels came and sought her.

They found her by my side.

There where her wings had brought her.

The angels took her away.

She had left their home, their God-bright day,

And came by me to hide…[1]

She loved me because love

Loves but imperfect things…

The angels came from above

And bore her away from me

They bore her away for ever

Between their luminous[2] wings.

Tis true she was their sister

And near to God as they.

But she loved me because

My heart had not a sister…

They have taken her away

And this is all there was…

[15v]

My heart is silent as a look

There is a home beyond the hills.

My heart is silent as a look.

My home is there, beyond the hills.

I bear my heart like an old curse.

There is no reason for regret.

I bear my heart like an old curse.

Why should we reason or regret?

My heart dwells with me like a ghost.

Beyond the hills my hope lies dead.

My heart dwells with me like a ghost.

Beyond my hope the hills lie dead.

They took away my heart like weeds.

It was not true that I should live.

They took away my heart like weeds.

I could not think it true to live.

Now there are great stains in my heart.

Like blood stains on a palace-floor.

Now there are great stains in my heart.

And my heart lies upon the floor.

The room is closed for ever now.

My heart is now buried alive.

The room[3] is closed for ever now.

The whole room is buried alive.
