Almada Negreiros e Sarah Affonso

O Arquivo Virtual começou a ser constituído por dois espólios importantes: o de Almada Negreiros (1893-1970), multifacetado escritor e artista plástico, e de Sarah Affonso (1899-1983), sua mulher, figura marcante da pintura modernista. O seu espólio conjunto inclui manuscritos literários, fotografias, cartas, documentos e obras plásticas, e está hoje em depósito no Centro de Estudos e Documentação Almada Negreiros Sarah Affonso (CEDANSA - NOVA FCSH).

The straight street lies before me

This way and that way trod

And lo! ‘tis another thing suddenly…

A sudden {…} mystery

That starts up out of God.

|The houses, the parents, the doors…

Stare at me not of depths

All is strange like the floors

Of a palace {…}|

This street and its houses clear

Is not right through Divine…

Quarried not of my fear

Of what is ever too near

To the soul’s immense shine.

Suddenly all stars far

And up in some clouds like a dream…

And a lust like of sense to war

Summons me to be aware

Of me everything other but seem…

Windows that look on the street…

Pavements not strength to their end…

Thy triple and weigh and meet

Beneath my[1] drive, sweetly feet

With which I trod mystery’s trend

She and the influence on my soul…

God answers more the glance and lips

Than in life to our fringe and tips…

Then the held sunflower becomes all

And her face becomes one with it

How is the sunflower and itself yet.

That winds locked doors.

No footstep in the flowers

No wind near the noise

The river found flowers…

And all this and all these

Colour, clear not in snows

On the hills if ever throes

Are beyond all this trees.

Dim landscape, up slow hour…

Lips started with not kissing

And desiring till saying

The half highest in the †

Is something to come

 

To arise arrive from the south

Upon our {…} are not doubt

To arrive with feeling torn

All becomes ruin and night

And yet starts at clear as e’er…

So all lies in a not light[2]

Under my eyes’ new sight

And my storm (at it) is an empty star…

And beneath a wall near to me…

And all my sense of things is wept

At of by myself, elect 

In tone by mystery.

And street and windows and all

Become a story o’er my head…

Something half dream and half pall.

And I have all † and pall

And night falls into my dread.

Over the apes eyes fair
