O pale from[1] the sense of being mortal

|Whence[2] strayed to yearning's {…} valley,|

Knock with cold hands at the closed portal

Of an abandoned palace-alley.

Thy hands fall and thy wild[3] eyes grope…

O let me kiss thy feet and hope!…

Let us not wish to understand,

Bravely despair even of despair;

Cold unfelt hand in cold dead hand,

Let us reach out for our Somewhere,

With bodies that the cold makes[4] none

By night to invisibly[5] done.

Perhaps thus losing earthly goal,

Our sense of us numbed to innerness,

Hand in hand spirits, warned in[7] bliss

Having by some gate not in space
