Last Song (II)
Elsewhere! Somewhere! Away…
Whitter! To know ‘t would be
That even in dreams to stay…[1]
By what eternal sea
Would my soul even play
Filling eternity
With movements on the strand
Mad golden with the golden sand?
_______
Alas! Over my dreams
Are wake[2]... My spirit reels
That even what to it seems
Should not fill what feels…
_______
What lands are those that haunt
My inner eyes? What chimes?
Lands soft as a soft chariot,
Freed from the taint of times
And from spaces’ {…} stains
[13v]
2
What passes then remains,
|Does taint things as thou mean
Our sin the name song(t) here|.
_______
My eyes are veiled with dreaming
And dull even in dreams,
So complex {…} is seeing…
By storm eternal streams
Is thou no more endeavour,
Are our children far even
In some new unconscious,
And let loose[3] from the senses
Of life beside that river?
__________
[14r]
3
Oh forms of happiness!
A mariner old for sea
Who by the evening paleness
Spends his piper-hour
In looking tranquilly
Not in the waves muting
And is happy thus, in a thought
That is not thinking even…
How haply! And he knows it not…
_______
An old |*pass| sunken quiet
At his friends who {…}
His head aches with the riot
Of his grandchildren’s play
Oh, from what thoughts he is away!
Knew he what Has! All things
_______
A negro happy giving
In new ship to the sea…
[14v]
4.
A little sensation coming
Home by the set of ever
Grand of it with no longing,
Happy somewhere… Some!
_______
Oh God and I here pining
With but a blessing of {…}
Except thou scope of soul…
How a small bit of bliss
Could pleasure my soul to cloy…
Oh God, that I who am,
Close all the minds bright,
|Light the {…} yellow light
So far are, but more far…
O causeless misery!…|
[1] That even in dreams to stay… /In dreams from dreams to stay\
[2] wake /pale\
[3] loose /loosened\
