     The Arab sage’s child lay dead and blue’d 

And he bent nearer eyes into the scroll 

His trembling glance scarce read as understood, 

But he was master of his own control.  

     “God is great and all things are in His hand; 

Both our good and our evil are His good; 

Our life we cannot will nor understand, 

But He knows all and all is as He would.”  

     This he thought, back of what he dreaming read, 

And the reality of his dead child 

Became a corner of vision, something dead 

To thought; that scarce his living thinking whiled 

     From God, whose everyness is everything.  

     And he read on till morn wrought its brief spring.
