Detective Stories.

As the tale we are considering is based on an intellectual problem and on its solution, it is obvious, axiomatic, that the figure of the man who solves it must be the central figure. I mean by this that the detective story is to be severely distinguished from the novel in which the detective comes in only to solve the problem. Take, as an example, “The Leavenworth Case”; here we have a novel, with a love plot and a mystery, the mystery subject to the love plot.

Simplicity of plot is, it is needless to say, requisite not only in a detective story, but in all kinds of novels and of stories. From this necessity of a simple plot we draw the conclusion that the detective story must be short, for there never is a problem that need up very much space. Length in one of these stories is only admitted when the reasoning demands it. Such if the “Mystery of Marie Roget” of Edgar Allan Poe. Yet even this story is not long proportionally with its reasoning.[3]

O Conto de Imaginação.

Histórias Policiais.

Como o conto que estamos a considerar se baseia num problema intelectual e na sua solução, é óbvio, axiomático, que a figura do homem que o resolve deve ser a figura central. Quero dizer com isso que a história policial deve ser severamente distinguida do romance em que o detective entra apenas para resolver o problema. Tomemos, como exemplo, “The Leavenworth Case”; aqui temos um romance, com um enredo de amor e um de mistério, o tema de mistério para o enredo de amor.

A simplicidade do enredo, é desnecessário dizer, é um requisito não apenas numa história policial, mas em todos os tipos de romances e histórias. Desta necessidade de um enredo simples tiramos a conclusão de que a história policial deve ser curta, pois nunca há um problema que precise de muito espaço. A extensão de uma dessas histórias só é admitida quando o raciocínio o exige. Tal como o “Mystery of Marie Roget” de Edgar Allan Poe. No entanto, mesmo essa história não é longa proporcionalmente ao seu raciocínio.
