Poems like Student of Salamanca indifferent morally, neither good nor bad. Yet they must make an effect on the moral man – good in things was good, because it elevates. A man needs it and admires purely, is abstracted from himself. It is an element and therefore a moral work. The sublime is always pure. It is as impossible for the sublime to be coarse as for water[1] to resemble mud.

Poemas como o Estudante de Salamanca, indiferentes moralmente, nem bonos nem maus. No entanto, eles devem ter um efeito moral sobre o homem – o bom nas coisas era bom, porque eleva. Um homem precisa dele e admira-os puramente, é abstraído de si mesmo. É um elemento e, portanto, uma obra moral. O sublime é sempre puro. É tão impossível que o sublime seja grosseiro quanto a água se assemelhe à lama.
