Fernando Pessoa – “Many men live thee in their joys and feasts…”

[BNP/E3, 49A1 – 16]

Many men live thee in their joys and feasts

And use thy fame for their content most brute.

They loved thy beauty. Even among beasts

There is an instinct of the Absolute.

___

In the most low there is a {…} to love

Beauty or what they think it – ‘tis a sense

Older than memory, deeper, more intense

Than many things in our new nature more.

___

These shadows without substance are

And substances no shadows have

That haunt men from beyond the grave.

___

But beauty is no better thing to ill

What matter; a diamond

That brings a traitor is a diamond still
