Fernando Pessoa – “How yesterday is long ago!…”

[BNP/E3, 16A – 25v]

p. 597 [866]

How yesterday is long ago! The past

Is a fixed infinite distance from to-day,

And bygone things, the first-lived as the last,

In irreparable sameness far away.

_______

How the to-be is infinitely ever

|Out of the home wherein it will be Now’s|

Like some far wave yet above us on the[1] river,

That reaches not us, but waterflows!

_______

Yet[2] the engulf of yesterday – where lies it?

The mute time flee that is not yet, what is of[3]?

What is myself, when |inward| deep tries it?

The missing of minute into[4] minute.

_______

The mere eternal † where change

Is fixed but in knowing itself stray.
