[BNP/E3, 13A – 64]
The date of this composition would be hard to fix. The Editor sarcastically remarks that it is noticeably uncertain whether the voyage was made before the time of Christ (in which case no monk can have written it), or if within the last few years. In the face of such an authority we can say nothing; we are sure however that the date is not Before Christ. And if the date of the voyage be uncertain, the place to which the author travelled, or rather, sailed is veiled in the deepest obscurity. He started, we think, from Cadiz. But beyond this we cannot guess: he went once to the West and another to the North but what he did else is absolutely bewildering.
First with regard to the author of this booklet. He and a friend visited the strange country, civilized, learnt and wondered.
