Creative nations are distinguished by a peculiar cultural characteristic, which it would be idle to inquire into at the present moment: they have epic poems. Thus Italy, England and Portugal. Nations merely distributive, such as Spain, France and Germany, are characterized, however rich their literature, by the equal absence of a great member of that literary species. The Nibelungen can no more be considered an epics, than the Romances del Cid or the Chanson de Roland: these are merely epic elements, such as the Homeric poems were |*lower art| of. The epics I allude to are culture-epics, not folk-epics.

As nações criativas distinguem-se por uma característica cultural peculiar, que seria inútil investigar no momento presente: elas têm poemas épicos. Assim, Itália, Inglaterra e Portugal. Nações meramente distributivas, como Espanha, França e Alemanha, caracterizam-se, por mais rica que seja sua literatura, pela igual ausência de um grande representante dessa espécie literária. Os Nibelungos não podem ser considerados mais épicos do que Romances del Cid ou Chanson de Roland: são elementos meramente épicos, tais como os poemas homéricos eram de |*arte inferior|. Os épicos a que me refiro são épicos culturais, não épicos folclóricos.
