A detective story, or, more properly, a tale of investigation, is a mystery story, the chief interest of which lies, not in the mystery itself, but in the investigation of it. Ordinarily a tale is both – mystery story and a deductioning – for the mystery exists both for the reader and for the investigator; it is, however, not essential that it should exist for the reader. Dr. Austin Freeman, in The Shadow of the Wolf and the Tales gathered in The Singing Bone, has adopted, with ample success, the method of first showing the crime committed and then describing how Dr. Thorndyke discovers the criminal; the latter process constitutes the story, which is therefore not of mystery but a tale of investigation, or, in other words, a detective story pure and simple.

This being so, it stands to reason that a detective story is not good, as such, in prospective as its mystery is good but only in prospect – as the investigation is good[1]; when the mystery is good it becomes additionally good as a mystery, as distinct from a detective story, just as a poem, which in itself has but to conform to the rules of poetry, may be also interesting as a narrative – the poem, but not the poetry, going by this additional interest.

Uma história policial ou, mais propriamente, uma história de investigação, é uma história de mistério, cujo principal interesse reside, não no próprio mistério, mas na sua investigação. Geralmente uma história é ambas – história de mistério e de dedução – pois o mistério existe quer para o leitor, quer para o investigador; não é, contudo, essencial que deva existir para o leitor. O Dr. Austin Freeman, em The Shadow of the Wolf e nas histórias reunidas em The Singing Bone, adoptou, com grande sucesso, o método de mostrar primeiro o crime cometido e depois descrever como o Dr. Thorndyke descobre o criminoso; este último processo constitui a história, que é, por conseguinte, não de mistério, mas uma história de investigação ou, por outras palavras, uma história policial pura e simples.

Assim sendo, torna-se claro que uma história policial não é boa, enquanto tal, na perspectiva em que o seu mistério seja bom apenas potencialmente – enquanto a investigação for boa; quando o mistério é bom torna-se adicionalmente bom enquanto mistério, enquanto distinto de uma história policial, tal como um poema, que em si próprio se deva conformar às regras da poesia, pode ser também interessante enquanto uma narrativa – o poema, mas não a poesia, regendo-se por este interesse adicional.
