“The Keeper of Sheep”

A Great Portuguese Book of Poems

It is not generally known – not even in Portugal, and foreigners stand excused upon that – that Portuguese poetry is to-day, not only the greatest but the most original of our time. Many pages of this paper would not do justice to the several great and original poets of contemporary Portugal, and, to study these capably, we would have to carry back the study of Portuguese poetry to the middle of the last century, when Anthero de Quental broke with Portuguese sanctioned ways to forge ideas and to convey sub-metaphysical ideas, and created at once the essential Portuguese attitude towards the universe

and the attitude towards anything which is essentially Portuguese. The attitude in question may be described as the subjective sentiment of nature; not subjective in the sense of feeling Nature in accordance with us as Wordsworth and Shelley did, nor the feeling it symbolically as Victor Hugo did, but subjective in the sense of, so to speak, looking at Nature from within and seeing a tree or a stone, not from outside it, with however mellow a feeling, but from inside it, the poet identifying himself with the natural object.

All Portuguese poetry has run in this line, threading this intellectual image in all directions – either finding spiritualistic paths with Abílio Guerra Junqueiro, or pantheistic spiritualism with António Correia de Oliveira, or pantheistic transcendentalism with Teixeira de Pascoaes.

All poets not classifiable as pertaining to this current will be found either to base their inspiration on a lower basis, as, for instance, on directly popular sentiment, as in the case of João de Deus, or to have dwelt upon entirely foreign elements, as in the case of |João de Barros|, who is a pure Verhaerean poet.

It is the astonishing fact about Alberto Caeiro, whose first book has just been published, that he does not belong to either of these currents, that he is himself with a clearness and independence so astonishing as to be well nigh unexplainable on hard critical lines. Yet he is easy to understand if we interpret him as a horizon of new intellectual elements into a poetry so full of them as Modern Portuguese poetry is, and his appearance needs no explanation but the extraordinary inter-diffusion of poetical spirit in the literary Republic.

It may be wondered why we choose Alberto Caeiro, and not an older poet, to speak about Modern Portuguese poetry. The reason is very simple, but it is not that I consider him superior to Guerra Junqueiro, for instance, or to Teixeira de Pascoaes, to seek no further. As his work stands, his one book is evidently not justly comparable to Junqueiro’s ten and Pascoaes’ |twelve|, neither has he reached the summits of inspiration as Junqueiro in the Payer to Light, the only modern poem that can stand today against Wordsworth’s ode or Pascoaes in the extraordinary Elegy, the only modern poem that renders Browning’s Last Ride Together to a mere shade.

My reason for writing on Alberto Caeiro rather than on any other Portuguese poet is that Alberto Caeiro is more interesting than any of them. He is more astonishing, not because he is greater than some of the others, but because he is much more of a phenomenon than any of the others is.

His independence in respect of Portuguese lyrical currents, his equal independence in respect of any lyrical or literary currents whatsoever sum up his interest. He belongs to a species of poet of which there are only some examples, such as Blake, Whitman, Francis Jammes. But, though possibly he cannot be set besides the first of these – we have, however, no right to compare his one book to Blake’s total work -, he certainly possesses the quality of being, though of other species, remarkable too in the shaping of his poetry. He resembles Whitman most. But he transcends Whitman by the sanity and clarity of his inspiration and by the directness with which he works out his feelings into a coherent and astonishing new metaphysics.

Alberto Caeiro’s philosophy is a pure materialistic pantheism. But in his words this attitude has all

the soft allurement of spiritualism, all the occult power of idealism and all the clearness and naturalness of simple materialist philosophies.

It is difficult to describe what he thinks without translating all he wrote. His philosophy is very easily gathered from his little book, which is read in a quarter of an hour, and only understood as it is read, though far are in a position to note how astonishingly new is his point of view, and how normal his way of expressing it.

His philosophy is summed up in these two lines of his:

Compreender uma flor {…}

Comer um fruto {…}

Or lines like these

Sentido íntimo {…}

This is his authentic thesis (there is no other one for it).

In this book, which is all about himself, we have nothing about him, except that his eyes are blue.

It has[1] nothing about his thoughts or his feelings except that

“my thoughts are sensations”

and that his feelings are {…}

Yet when we finish the book, his understanding stands before us clear as day. It is something altogether new and fresh.

His attitude is this: he substitutes senses to thought and strives to bring his life as far as possible to the level of the life of a tree and[2] of a flower. He is the most objective poet that has ever been.

Não é do conhecimento geral - nem mesmo em Portugal, e os estrangeiros estão desculpados por isso - que a poesia portuguesa é hoje, não só a maior, mas a mais original do nosso tempo. Muitas páginas deste jornal não fariam justiça aos vários poetas grandes e originais de Portugal contemporâneo, e, para estudá-los com competência, teríamos de transportar o estudo da poesia portuguesa para meados do século passado, quando Antero de Quental rompeu com as formas sancionadas pelos portugueses de forjar ideias e de transmitir ideias sub-metafísicas, e criou de uma só vez a atitude portuguesa essencial para com o universo

e a atitude para com tudo o que é essencialmente português. A atitude em questão pode ser descrita como o sentimento subjectivo da natureza; não subjectivo no sentido de sentir a Natureza de acordo connosco como Wordsworth e Shelley fizeram, nem senti-la simbolicamente como Victor Hugo fez, mas subjectivo no sentido de, por assim dizer, olhar para a Natureza de dentro e ver uma árvore ou uma pedra, não de fora, por um qualquer sentimento suave, mas de dentro, identificando-se o poeta com o objecto natural.

Toda a poesia portuguesa tem seguido esta linha, percorrendo esta imagem intelectual em todas as direcções - seja encontrando caminhos espiritualistas com Abílio Guerra Junqueiro, seja o espiritualismo panteísta com António Correia de Oliveira, ou o transcendentalismo panteísta com Teixeira de Pascoaes.

Todos os poetas não classificáveis como pertencentes a esta corrente ou baseiam a sua inspiração em algo inferior, como, por exemplo, no sentimento directamente popular, como é o caso de João de Deus, ou apoiam-se em elementos inteiramente estrangeiros, como é o caso de |João de Barros|, que é um poeta verhaeriano puro.

Um facto espantoso acerca de Alberto Caeiro, cujo primeiro livro acaba de ser publicado, consiste em não pertencer a nenhuma destas correntes, em ser ele próprio com uma clareza e uma independência tão espantosas que são quase inexplicáveis pela dura crítica. No entanto, é fácil de compreender se o interpretarmos como um horizonte de novos elementos intelectuais numa poesia tão repleta deles como a poesia portuguesa moderna, e o seu aparecimento não precisa de outra explicação a não ser a extraordinária interdifusão do espírito poético na República literária.

Pode perguntar-se porque escolhemos Alberto Caeiro, e não um poeta mais velho, para falar da poesia portuguesa moderna. A razão é muito simples, mas não é que o considere superior a Guerra Junqueiro, por exemplo, ou a Teixeira de Pascoaes, para não ir mais longe. No que respeita à sua obra, o seu único livro evidentemente não é justamente comparável aos dez de Junqueiro e aos |doze| de Pascoaes, nem atingiu o ápice da inspiração de Junqueiro em Oração à Luz, o único poema moderno que pode hoje comparar-se à ode de Wordsworth ou Pascoaes na extraordinária Elegia, o único poema moderno que torna Last Ride Together de Browning uma mera sombra.

O meu motivo para escrever sobre Alberto Caeiro e não sobre qualquer outro poeta português é que Alberto Caeiro é mais interessante do que qualquer um deles. Ele é mais surpreendente, não porque seja maior do que alguns dos outros, mas porque é um fenómeno muito maior do que qualquer um dos outros.

A sua independência face às correntes líricas portuguesas, a sua igual independência face a quaisquer correntes líricas ou literárias resumem o interesse que ele possa ter. Ele pertence a uma espécie de poeta da qual existem apenas alguns exemplos, como Blake, Whitman, Francis Jammes. Mas, embora possivelmente ele não possa ser colocado a lado do primeiro destes - não temos, de facto, o direito de comparar o seu único livro com a obra total de Blake -, ele certamente possui a qualidade de ser, embora de outro modo, notável também na formação de sua poesia. Ele parece-se mais com Whitman. Mas transcende Whitman pela sanidade e clareza da sua inspiração e pelo modo directo com que desenvolve os seus sentimentos numa nova metafísica coerente e surpreendente.

A filosofia de Alberto Caeiro é um panteísmo materialista puro. Mas nas suas palavras, essa atitude tem toda

a sedução suave do espiritualismo, todo o poder oculto do idealismo e toda a clareza e naturalidade das filosofias materialistas simples.

É difícil descrever o que ele pensa sem traduzir tudo o que escreveu. A sua filosofia é facilmente extraída do seu pequeno livro, que é lido num quarto de hora, e compreendido à medida que é lido, embora possamos notar quão surpreendentemente novo é o seu ponto de vista, e quão normal é a sua maneira de expressá-lo.

A sua filosofia resume-se nestes dois versos:

Compreender uma flor {…}

Comer um fruto {…}

Ou em versos como este

Sentido íntimo {…}

Esta é a sua tese autêntica (não há outra).

Neste livro, que é todo sobre ele, não há nada sobre ele, excepto que seus olhos são azuis.

Não há nada sobre seus pensamentos ou sentimentos, excepto que

“os meus pensamentos são sensações”

e que seus sentimentos são {…}

No entanto, quando terminamos o livro, a sua compreensão permanece diante de nós clara como o dia. É algo totalmente novo e fresco.

A sua atitude é a seguinte: ele substitui os sentidos pelo pensamento e esforça-se para reconduzir a sua vida, tanto quanto possível, ao nível da vida de uma árvore e de uma flor. Ele é o poeta mais objectivo que alguma vez existiu.
