Francis Thompson:

Shelley thinks in images, they through images. This is subtle, but can be small-changed. We read Shelley and hardly notice that we are reading images. In the metaphysicals this never happens not even in their greatest abandonment and self-dispossession. (The modern poet who, though like Shelley always thinks in images, yet thinks in images similarly showing as those of the Metaphysicals is Victor Hugo).

– At a great intensity of feeling there is a similarity indeed, just as a crystal {…} lit from the inside (this is the metaphor for Shelley) and a crystal |ball| lit strongly from outside shine alike. But the manner-of-lighting is altogether different.

Shelley pensa em imagens, eles através de imagens. Isso é subtil, mas pode ser modificado. Lemos Shelley e mal percebemos que estamos lendo imagens. Nos metafísicos, isso nunca acontece, nem mesmo no seu maior abandono e auto-expressão. (O poeta moderno que, embora como Shelley, sempre pensa em imagens, mas pensa em imagens semelhantes às dos Metafísicos, é Victor Hugo).

- Numa grande intensidade de sentimento há, de facto, uma semelhança, assim como um cristal {…} iluminado por dentro (esta é a metáfora de Shelley) e uma |bola| de cristal fortemente iluminada com o brilho externo. Mas a forma de iluminação é totalmente diferente.
