The great fault of Shelley is abundantly shown to us in his poetry – carelessness. His life displays it not less than does his poetry. A man of supreme kindliness in the whole, he yet did things of a truth cruel and incredible from the mere want of close casuistic consideration of circumstances. He was too hearty in his judgments and never perceived how necessary is it to subject the plans, the intentions and the poetry of enthusiasm to a close and impartial discrimination.[1]
