Both Poe and Shelley were poets of the spiritual, but they have a great difference. Shelley describes the spiritual as the spiritual; Poe describes the spiritual as the not human. Shelley sees the grandeur, the joyous greatness of the Problem of life; Poe sees also this greatness, but he sees none the less its horror. Shelley puts the great problem before us in reference to the soul that is warmed by its joyousness and its limitless love; Poe puts the problem before us in reference to the mind, which is crushed by its insolubility.

Tanto Poe quanto Shelley eram poetas do espiritual, mas têm uma grande diferença. Shelley descreve o espiritual como o espiritual; Poe descreve o espiritual como o não humano. Shelley vê a grandeza, a alegre grandeza do Problema da vida; Poe vê também essa grandeza, mas não vê menos o seu horror. Shelley coloca-nos o grande problema em referência à alma que é aquecida pela sua alegria e pelo seu amor sem limites; Poe coloca o problema diante de nós em referência à mente, que é esmagada pela sua insolubilidade.
