Shakespeare.

In the highest pathetic flights of Shakespearean tragedy we – those who are accustomed to feel deeply and profoundly – find something lacking, something missing. Part of the pathos is absent. It is evident why. The English race is not capable of attaining the complete depths of feeling and sentiment; in |missing| those depths Shakespeare is thoroughly English. He is thoroughly English, in matters as in his style.

In English Hood is the one who has gone deepest, in a simple, unambitious manner though – in the “Bridge of Sighs”.

Nos mais elevados voos patéticos da tragédia de Shakespeare, nós - que estamos acostumados a sentir intensa e profundamente - sentimos que falta algo, que algo está ausente. Parte do pathos está ausente. É evidente porquê. A raça inglesa não é capaz de atingir as profundidades completas da sensibilidade e do sentimento; ao |não atingir| essas profundezas, Shakespeare é totalmente inglês. Ele é totalmente inglês, tanto nos assuntos como no seu estilo.

Em inglês, Hood é quem foi mais fundo, embora de uma forma simples e pouco ambiciosa - em “Bridge of Sighs”.
