Impermanence.

A Greek intellect and a modern sensibility. Yet our discipline, though Greek in quality, cannot be Greek in quantity. Our sensibility is of complexity which antiquity could not even dream of; so our discipline of that sensibility must involve the use of a far higher quantum of intellectual force.

The Greeks might feel deeply, or strongly or wildly, but they always felt rationally. Their emotions were born reasonable, even where born fiery and violent. Not only can we not attain to that quality, but we must not; for, if we had the Greek intellect and the Greek feeling, we would be ancient Greeks, not modern Europeans.

Contudo, a nossa disciplina, embora grega em qualidade, não pode ser grega em quantidade. A nossa sensibilidade é de uma complexidade que a antiguidade nem sequer poderia sonhar; assim, a nossa disciplina dessa sensibilidade deve envolver o uso de uma quantidade muito superior de força intelectual.

Os gregos podiam sentir profundamente, fortemente ou ferozmente, mas sempre sentiam racionalmente. As suas emoções nasciam razoavelmente, mesmo onde nasciam ardentes e violentas. Não só não podemos, como não devemos ater-nos a essa qualidade; pois, se tivéssemos o intelecto grego e o sentimento grego, seriamos gregos antigos e não europeus modernos.
