The artist must be born beautiful and elegant; for he that worships beauty must not himself be unfair. And it is assuredly a terrible pain for an artist to find not at all in himself that which he strives for. Who, looking at the portraits of Shelley, of Keats, of Byron, of Milton and of Poe can wonder that these were poets. All were beautiful, all were beloved and admired, all had in love warmth of life and heavenly joy, as far as any poet, or indeed any man can have.

O artista deve nascer belo e elegante; pois aquele que venera a beleza não deve ser ele próprio feio. E é seguramente uma dor terrível para o artista não encontrar, de todo, nele próprio aquilo a que aspira. Quem, olhando para os retractos de Shelley, de Keats, de Byron, de Milton e de Poe se admirará que estes foram poetas. Todos eram belos, todos eram amados e admirados, todos tinham no amor o calor da vida e a alegria celestial, tanto quanto um poeta ou até qualquer homem pode ter.
