who, I dare guess, never have conceived it possible that one of present day Portugal anything great might come, and perhaps still like that the Lusíadas is the greatest poem in the Portuguese language, which might have been true before the publication of Pátria, in 1898, but is so in †.

O facto casual é que a própria atitude da alma portuguesa é extraordinária como a isabelina. Isso pode parecer estranho a si,

que, atrevo-me a supor, nunca concebeu a possibilidade de algo grande aparecer em Portugal dos nossos dias, e talvez ainda goste que os Lusíadas seja o maior poema em língua portuguesa, o que poderia ter sido verdade antes da publicação do Pátria, em 1898, mas é assim em †.
